This highly interactive 3 day course will include a significant amount of practical mock court training based on medical malpractice case studies. You will learn:
- The court room experience from the perspective of the healthcare expert
- Preparing for court: knowing your case facts and issues, meeting with counsel, familiarization with the courtroom procedures and layout
- Writing the expert CV
- Essentials of trial procedure
- The role of counsel and the judge in the presentation of evidence
- Becoming qualified as an expert witness for the first time: preparing for this milestone
- The role of the expert witness: preparation of reports, consulting with counsel, testifying in court, research, writing, teaching
- Knowing your limits as an expert witness
- Legal issues that affect expert witnesses
- How to give effective and convincing testimony
- Keys to effective communication with the jury
- Testimonial do's and don'ts
- Handling direct and cross-examination
- Understanding common cross-examination strategies and how to work with them
- Billing for expert consulting
- Practical moot court training based on medical malpractice cases
For Physicians: "This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This programme has been reviewed and approved by the office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development, University of Calgary. Participants may claim up to a maximum of 19.0 study credits."
Nurses and all other allied health care professionals will be provided with a certificate of completion for 21 hours of medical/legal education.
Presenters:
Lawyer Jonathan Hak Q.C. has been employed as a Crown Prosecutor with Alberta Justice for 21 years, is an adjunct instructor in forensic video analysis law at the University of Indianapolis, Indiana, a sessional instructor in the Forensic Studies Program at Mount Royal University and a sessional instructor on management law at the University of Lethbridge (Calgary). Mr. Hak has developed and taught a comprehensive training program for expert witnesses in Canada, the US and the UK. Mr. Hak will be the main instructor for the TEACH course.
Chris Rokosh RN, PNC(C) is a Legal Nurse Consultant and president of CanLNC Education and CanLNC Experts. Ms. Rokosh has provided expert nursing opinion and appeared as an expert nurse witness in Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Ms. Rokosh lectures widely on medical/legal issues to doctors, lawyers and nurses and is a regular guest lecturer to the BScN program at the University of Calgary.
The Physician viewpoint will be represented by an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with courtroom testimony experience.
